Who is and what are the responsibilities of a scaffold voorman?

The foreman belongs to the management team. He or she is the one who is responsible for the correct construction of scaffolding, the need to solve problems and ensure safety.
He or she must have the ability to build specialised scaffolding according to the instructions given by the scaffold constructor.
The Voorman directly manages the scaffolders building the scaffolding. He/she is also responsible for reporting on the progress of the work to the principal or client.

The scaffolding foreman (Voorman Steigerbouw) is a responsible function. This person is concerned not only with the correct and fastest possible execution of the order, but also with the health of the employees directly on and around the scaffolding.

Voorman scaffolding qualifications

According to DNV certification, there are several levels of professional competence:

  • Assembler’s helper (Hulpmonteur Steigerbouw)
  • Assembler (Monteur Steigerbouw)
  • First fitter (1e Monteur Steigerbouw)
  • Inspector (Steigerinspecteur)
  • Foreman (Voorman Steigerbouw)

In order to obtain DNV certification to work as a voorman, you must complete a course and pass an examination.
A scaffolding foreman qualification can be applied for by the First Scaffolding Fitter, this is the next level in career progression for scaffolding workers.

The programme covers the topics of :

  • Personal protective equipment
  • How to effectively manage groups of scaffolders
  • The process from contract acquisition to implementation and completion
  • Study of drawings and their preparation
  • Scaffolding methods according to the Dutch principles
  • Principles of physics (stresses, internal forces)
  • Calculating and checking masses and volumes of scaffolding
  • Assessing aspects of the safe use of the scaffolding
  • During the inspection, making adjustments to the scaffolding if necessary in order to approve it for use
  • Informing the client about ways and solutions for complex scaffolding
  • Ways of communication between assemblers and the client
  • Informing in time about material shortages and making simple reports for the client
  • Effective ways of calculating scaffolding for the client

The training including exam lasts 5 days.

  • 4 days theory (each day 8 hours)
  • 1 day exam (180 minutes)

Each day, we start training at 8:00 am.
At 12:30 we organise a longer break with a hot meal.
During the lectures, we take short breaks after each approximately 1.5 hour block of lectures or practical classes.

Each trainee must be at least 18 years old and have a valid identity document (ID card or passport) and a valid VCA certificate.
Registration with SVWOH or a DNV certificate, a first fitter certificate and a minimum of 1.5 years’ experience as a first fitter, confirmed by the employer, are also required.

DNV Voorman courses are conducted in Dutch only.

The exam is conducted in Dutch.

Scaffold foreman in the Netherlands and Belgium

The job of scaffolding foreman/manager is a position that requires a lot of experience, stress resistance and knowledge of the Dutch language.
It is the next level in your career. To become a scaffolding site foreman it is necessary to have experience as a DNV first scaffolder.

For a long time there has been a significant shortage of scaffolding foremen in both the Netherlands and Belgium. As a result, DNV Voorman-certified jobs are not only easy to find but salaries for this position are increasing very quickly.

Voorman scaffolding course

At Bonapi Training Center, we offer training together with an exam to enable you to start working as a Voorman Steigerbouw.

After the training course and passing the exam, you will receive a certificate together with an registration in the CDR system.

The examination is always conducted in Dutch.
