SVWOH is introducing new changes – this time, they don’t concern formal requirements or certificates. This change is much more tangible: the presence of cameras during exams. In the coming months, SVWOH will be testing the use of so-called bodycams – personal cameras that record the course of the exam.
Why cameras?
According to SVWOH, the goal is to increase transparency throughout the examination process. The concept is simple: the camera will accompany the examiner during both the theoretical and practical parts of the exam.
SVWOH states that recordings can serve three main purposes:
- Providing the candidate with specific feedback if they fail – based on real situations recorded during the exam.
- Handling complaints and appeals – the recording can serve as evidence in the case of a controversial evaluation or a so-called KO (knock out).
- Preventing cheating – the bodycam acts as a tool to detect attempts at cheating or unauthorized assistance.
And everything would be great… if it weren’t for the fact that not everyone is thrilled about this new solution.
During a recent conversation with one of the examiners, an interesting observation came up: “This will definitely change the nature of the exams,” he said. In the background, important questions also arise:
– How will it affect the atmosphere of the exam?
– Will the candidate be able to concentrate, knowing there’s a camera watching them?
– Will the examiner be able to act freely?
This is a moment to reflect on how modern tools are changing the dynamic of familiar examination processes. For some examiners, the presence of a camera might feel intrusive. For candidates – an added source of stress. For organizers – new responsibilities related to GDPR and data storage.
And even though SVWOH assures that the Zepcam system is fully GDPR compliant, some participants may still feel that the exam has become more formal and procedural than it used to be.
A change that’s here to stay?
It’s possible that after the testing phase, bodycams will become a standard part of SVWOH exam supervision.
Is that a good thing? There’s no clear answer. While transparency is undoubtedly valuable, this new situation requires a fresh and thoughtful approach.
We’ll be closely following how this bodycam initiative develops – and we’ll keep you updated with all the key information.
