What does this position entail and what are the tasks of a advanced scaffolding fitter?
Scaffolding installed by a professional scaffolder is extremely important for the implementation and execution of many projects. People who hold this function provide safety and support for workers on the construction site, whilst enabling them to comfortably and safely carry out their work at heights.
The advanced scaffolder has sufficient knowledge, experience and authorization to independently build simple as well as complex scaffolding (up to class 4). Very often, after obtaining the additional qualifications of Foreman, one acts as a scaffolding manager and supervises a team consisting of assistants and scaffolding fitters.
Advanced scaffolder qualifications
According to the DNV certification, we distinguish different degrees of professional competence within the scaffolding business:
- Assistant (Hulpmonteur steigerbouw)
- Basic Scaffolder (Monteur steigerbouw)
- Advanced Scaffolder (Eerste monteur steigerbouw)
- Inspector ( Scaffolding Inspector)
- Foreman (Foreman Scaffolding)
In order to enter the training for the advanced scaffolder and to receive the certificate, it is necessary to obtain the DNV basic scaffolder certificate in advance. Holders of DNV entitlements are exempt from registration in SVWOH. The candidate must also have a minimum VCA Basic or VCA VOL certificate (VCA is the equivalent of OHS training) giving him or her preparation in the field of recognizing and preventing hazards in the workplace.

The programme covers the topics of :
- Personal protective equipment
- Risk analysis of the task before starting work on the building site or factory
- Material nomenclature and different types of scaffolding (Layher Allround, Couplock, Peri up, Scafom)
- Scaffolding methods according to Dutch principles
- Principles of physics (stresses, internal forces)
- Material science
- Reading complex technical drawings and making sketches
- Simple weight calculations per rack and bolt
The advanced scaffolder training course including exam lasts 5 days.
- 2 days theory (8 hours each day)
- 2 days of practice (8 hours each day)
- 1 day exam, which consists of 2 hours theory and 5 hours practice)
Each day, we start training at 8:00 am.
At 12:30 we organise a longer break with a hot meal.
During the lectures, we take short breaks after each approximately 1.5 hour block of lectures or practical classes.
All trainees must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid identity document (ID card or passport) and a valid VCA certificate.
Obligated for SVWOH exam of Advanced Scaffdolder:
- Valid Advanced or Basic Scaffolder certificate on the day of the exam
- Dutch or Belgian VCA Basic or VCA VOL
To participate in the practical training you need :
- personal protective equipment ( helmet, goggles , work clothes and ankle boots )
- safety harness with lines
- tools must be secured with ropes to prevent falling.
All equipment can be purchased locally from Bonapi.
Candidates for the course must be fully physically and mentally fit. This means that individuals with missing or impaired limbs cannot participate in the training. Participants must have full physical ability to safely and effectively operate this type of machinery.

The role of the advanced scaffolder is invaluable during the construction of scaffolding.
