SOG Qualifications – What Are They and Where Are They Required?
SOG is an abbreviation for SSVV Opleidingengids, which can be translated as “SSVV Training Guide.” SSVV (Stichting Samenwerken voor Veiligheid), or the Foundation for Safety Cooperation, is the institution responsible for certification. It brings together 24 organizations from the most important industrial sectors in the Netherlands.
The main goal of SSVV is to improve safety in the workplace. Certification systems such as VCA and SOG are designed to ensure that employees carrying out their tasks are properly trained, certified, and ready to work in various conditions. Through the SOG qualifications, SSVV aims to make work in high-risk environments safer for all participants in the chain—from the moment of assignment to implementation. The foundation effectively raises safety standards, leading to better working conditions and greater health protection for employees.
SOG qualifications are required in the Netherlands in high-risk industries. In addition to the Netherlands, they are also recognized in Belgium.
In Which Industries Are SOG Qualifications Needed?
The SOG certification was created with the petrochemical industry in mind. It is one of the most demanding sectors, where the use of advanced technologies and equipment, as well as working with hazardous substances, is a daily occurrence.
However, over time, SOG qualifications have begun to encompass other industries where there is a high level of occupational risk. Workers in these industries are required to have specialized skills, operate advanced equipment (e.g., forklifts or scissor and telescopic lifts), and be familiar with safety regulations.
The SOG system therefore also includes, among others:
- The port sector
- The chemical industry
- Construction
- Transportation
- Energy and extraction
It is precisely here that actions are taken daily that can lead to accidents, threatening the lives and health of employees. For example:
- The risk of falls or crushing when operating mobile equipment and handling loads
- Hazards associated with handling hazardous substances
- Explosions, choking, burns, suffocation, etc.

What Do You Gain from SOG Courses?
Participating in SOG training is a very good decision. Why?
- Certificate Recognized in the Netherlands and Belgium
Having SOG qualifications opens doors to many career opportunities, as they are valued by employers in the Netherlands and Belgium. With this certification, you can apply for jobs in various industries, even the most demanding ones. - Skills Enhancement and Career Development
Taking part in these courses allows you to acquire practical skills and theoretical knowledge, making you a more competitive candidate in the job market. Employers often prefer workers with additional qualifications, and an increase in professional competencies usually translates to higher salaries and better working conditions. - Increased Safety
SOG courses place a strong emphasis on health and safety regulations, which helps reduce the risk of accidents. Employees who have obtained SOG qualifications are more aware of hazards and can effectively avoid dangers. - Compliance with Regulations
In high-risk industries, having an SOG certificate in the Netherlands is mandatory. The qualifications are recorded in the central CDR registry, allowing employers to easily verify employees’ credentials.
Standard Forklift Courses or SOG Training?
Standard courses, such as forklift training, may be sufficient in less demanding work environments. SOG certificates were created with high-risk workplaces in mind. Therefore, SOG qualifications ensure that employees not only possess the necessary technical knowledge but also the skills required to work in the most challenging conditions.
The difference lies in the higher safety standards and more advanced training methods. SOG training is tailored to the specific needs and requirements of various industries, enhancing their effectiveness and appeal in the Dutch job market.
SOG Qualifications and the SSVV Register
As mentioned earlier, SOG certificates are recorded in the SSVV register, also known as the Central Register of Qualifications (CDR). This register ensures transparency and allows for easy verification of the authenticity of certificates. Having an entry in the CDR is an additional asset that enhances your credibility in the job market. The ability to verify a certificate allows employers to be confident in their employees’ qualifications
How to Check SOG Qualifications?
- Visit the SSVV register website.
- Enter your last name (Achternaam) and date of birth (Geboortedatum), then click the Search (Zoeken) button.
- You can also search for your certificate by entering its number (Diplomanummer).
