What does this position entail and what are the tasks of a scaffolding fitter?
Scaffolding installed by a professional fitter is extremely important for the implementation and execution of many projects. Solid scaffolding provides safety and support for the workers on the construction site, whilst allowing them to perform their work comfortably at height.
The basic scaffolder is responsible for the entire process of erecting and installing the scaffolding, from the preparation of the workspace to the assembly and protection of the finished structure.
The scaffolding fitter has the appropriate knowledge to erect, fit and dismantle scaffolding.
Nonetheless, every scaffolding fitter is obliged to work under the supervision of a advanced scaffolder.
Basic Scaffolder qualifications
According to the DNV certification, we distinguish different degrees of professional competence within the scaffolding business:
- Assistant (Hulpmonteur steigerbouw)
- Basic Scaffolder (Monteur steigerbouw)
- Advanced Scaffolder (Eerste monteur steigerbouw)
- Inspector ( Scaffolding Inspector)
- Foreman (Foreman Scaffolding)
To receive a DNV certificate entitling you to assemble and build scaffolding, you must complete the course and pass the exam.
The certificate of an assistant scaffolding fitter is valid for 5 years. After this period, it is necessary to pass both the theoretical and practical exam again.

The price/costs of the basic scaffolder course including the SVWOH exam and DNV certification contain:

The course program covers subjects such as:
- The importance of personal protective equipment
- Risk analysis of the task, before starting work on the construction site or the factory
- Material nomenclature and information regarding different types of scaffolding (Layher Allround, Couplock, Peri up, Scafom)
- Ways of building scaffolding according to Dutch rules
- Principles of physics (stresses, internal forces)
- Knowledge about the materials that will be used
- Reading simple technical drawings and making sketches
- Simple calculation of the weight per rack and bolt
Scaffolder training including examination lasts 5 days.
- 2 days theory (8 hours each day)
- 2 days of practice (8 hours each day)
- 1 day exam, which consists of 2 hours theory and 5 hours practice)
Each day, we start training at 8:00 am.
At 12:30 we organise a longer break with a hot meal.
During the lectures, we take short breaks after each approximately 1.5 hour block of lectures or practical classes.
Each trainee must be at least 19 years old and have a valid identity document (identity card or passport).
Note: A driving licence is not a valid identity document.
Valid Dutch or Belgian VCA Basic or VCA VOL.
To join the scaffolder course, you must have an entry in the SVWOH register as an aspirant or a valid DNV basic scaffolder certificate entered in the CDR or Certcheck register.
To participate in the practical training you need:
– personal protective equipment ( helmet, goggles, work clothes and ankle boots )
– safety harness with lines
– tools must be secured with ropes to prevent falling.
All equipment can be purchased locally from Bonapi.
Candidates for the course must be fully physically and mentally fit. This means that individuals with missing or impaired limbs cannot participate in the training. Participants must have full physical ability to safely and effectively operate this type of machinery.

For the convenience of our trainees, the Bonapi Training Center has prepared teaching facilities with well equipped lecture rooms, a practical training area and a large hall.
Any new person without any Dutch DNV qualifications, who wants to start to work in the scaffolding industry in the Netherlands, is obliged to register with SVWOH as an assistant scaffolding fitter, which is valid for 1 year.
The steps to register with SVWOH :
- Creating an account should be personal
- There is a fee of €108,90 per person
- Enter your VCA or SCC certificate number (having a certificate is a prerequisite to take the scaffolding fitter exam)
- Take the test consisting of 10 questions (after passing the test, the person becomes an assistant scaffolding fitter)
Registration can take place the day before the DNV scaffolding fitter exam. Do not wait too long,
because any scaffolding fitter who is registered at the DNV earns much more on the Dutch and Belgian markets.
Work in the Netherlands pays off if you took the DNV exam. If you have a registration in the Netherlands and work as a ZZP or business, then you are able to earn from € 25 to € 37 per hour. If you have a contract via an employment agency, a scaffolding fitter earns around €400 to €650 weekly.
Basic scaffolder in the Netherlands and Belgium
Scaffolding fitters are well-paid specialists in the Netherlands. This is due to many factors, for example the fact that it is not a light or easy job.
We should also mention the high physical strain and effort, the fact that scaffolders work at height and under time pressure, or in often changing weather conditions. These factors contribute to the reasoning that candidates for this position can count on a high salary, even with
little experience.

Our training prepares you comprehensively to work as a scaffolding fitter (Steigermonteur).
After completing the course and passing the exam, you will receive a certificate with an entry in the register, which is valid for 5 years. Depending on whether you are DNV certified together with the Dutch VCA or Belgian VCA, you will be logged to the cdr register or the certcheck register.
