Costs of running a ZZP business in the Netherlands – what to expect when operating as a self-employed professional

Starting your own business in the Netherlands as a ZZP (Zelfstandige Zonder Personeel – self-employed without employees) is a great option if you want to work independently and have full control over your work. But before you launch your company, it’s important to understand the costs involved. From registration fees to accounting, taxes, and insurance – here’s everything you need to know before starting out as a ZZP.

How much does it cost to register a ZZP business in the Netherlands?

Setting up a one-person business in the Netherlands is relatively inexpensive, but there are a few fees to keep in mind.

  • Registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) costs between €51 and €75, depending on the source.
  • You’ll also need to request an extract from the KVK register (Uittreksel), which costs around €15.40. This is often required when opening a business bank account.
  • Registering your business is a simple process that can be done online or during a visit to a KVK office.

Accounting and taxes for ZZP in the Netherlands – what to expect?

As a ZZP in the Netherlands, you're responsible for your own bookkeeping and tax declarations. Let’s break down the main costs and taxes involved.

How much does accounting cost for ZZP?

Doing your own bookkeeping – If you have basic knowledge of accounting, you can use software like Moneybird, e-boekhouden.nl or Exact Online. Subscriptions cost between €10 and €30 per month.

Hiring an accountant – Many freelancers choose to work with a bookkeeper or accounting firm to avoid mistakes and save time. They help with documentation, VAT filings and income tax returns. Expect to pay between €700 and €2000 per year, depending on the scope of services.

What taxes do ZZP entrepreneurs pay?

Every business owner in the Netherlands must file and pay taxes regularly. Here are the most important ones:

  1. Income Tax (Inkomstenbelasting)
Calculated based on your annual income.
The basic income tax rate is 36.95% for lower income brackets.
Good to know: ZZP entrepreneurs can benefit from the zelfstandigenaftrek, a self-employment tax deduction that lowers taxable income.
  2. VAT (BTW – Belasting Toegevoegde Waarde)
The standard VAT rate is 21%, but some sectors benefit from 9% or 0% (e.g. books or medical services).
VAT must be reported quarterly, but small businesses with low turnover can apply for the Kleineondernemersregeling (KOR), which exempts them from VAT obligations.
  3. Health and social insurance contributions
ZZP entrepreneurs must have health insurance (Zorgverzekering) which costs around €100–€150 per month.
There is also a mandatory income-dependent contribution under the Zorgverzekeringswet, based on your yearly earnings.
Pension and disability insurance are not mandatory, but it’s wise to arrange these privately to secure your financial future.

Can ZZP entrepreneurs reduce their taxes?

The Dutch tax system offers several ways to reduce your tax burden:

  • Zelfstandigenaftrek – A tax deduction for self-employed individuals that lowers taxable income.
  • MKB-winstvrijstelling – An additional deduction that reduces income tax by 14%, available if you work at least 1,200 hours per year.
  • Business expense deductions – You can deduct costs related to equipment, training, transport, office rent, and more.

Insurance costs for ZZP entrepreneurs

As a ZZP, you don’t receive standard social security benefits, so it’s important to arrange your own financial protection.

  • Health insurance – Mandatory and costs around €100–€150 per month.
  • Disability insurance (AOV – arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering) – This covers your income if you become ill or unable to work. Costs vary based on your age, industry, and risk profile, but average around €100–€300 per month.
  • Business liability insurance (AVB – aansprakelijkheidsverzekering) – Protects you against client claims for damages or mistakes in your work. It typically costs between €20 and €50 per month.

Final thoughts

Starting a ZZP business in the Netherlands comes with relatively low setup costs, but it’s essential to budget for ongoing expenses like accounting, taxes, and insurance. The more you know about tax deductions and financial planning from the start, the easier it will be to manage your business. Planning to become a ZZP? Take control of your finances and running your own company in the Netherlands will be much smoother!
